Martyr Festival, San Cristóbal de las Casas

Cathedral

a colonial baroque style building whose construction began in 1528 and over the centuries has been an emblem of the city. A beauty and treasures that it keeps inside, as well as a bit of its history that makes San Cristóbalenses so proud.

Founded under the dedication of Our Lady of the Assumption, with a façade that offers geometric lines that give light and shadow to the observer and whose architecture shows the strength of the adobe with its baroque, Mudejar and neoclassical elements. This 16th century building has become one of the most important symbols of San Cristóbal, both for its architecture and for having been named the Cathedral of Peace.

Amber Museum

Located in what was the convent of La Merced, is this wonderful and interesting museum of a fossil resin that has served as an icon and inspiration for the Chiapas Artisans: Amber, the most characteristic gem of Chiapas. Miners, artisans and merchants from the municipality of Simojovel had the initiative to create this space for the exhibition and sale of such an appreciated Chiapaneca jewel; whose themes, contents and collections were built from their ideas, experiences, contributions and enriching proposals.

Museum of popular cultures

It was inaugurated on February 7, 2000 with the purpose of recovering, revaluing and recreating in a vital way all the manifestations and expressions of the popular culture of the state of Chiapas. The colonial-style property it occupies is located in front of La Merced Park, a few meters from the Former Convent of the same name, currently the Chiapas Amber Museum. It has a temporary exhibition room. Its themes are festivals, rituals and ceremonies, life cycles, civics, clothing, symbols, technologies and popular arts.

Sergio Castro Museum of Regional Costumes

The museum exhibits more than 90 costumes that represent the different indigenous populations of Chiapas. Jewelry, musical instruments, costume accessories, religious objects, hats, masks, figurines and animal skins complement the exhibition. Its owner, Mr. Sergio Castro Martínez, personally leads the guided tours and explains to visitors the places, clothing, ceremonies and daily life of the people living in the state of Chiapas.

Mayan World Textile Center

The collection of the Textile Center of the Mayan World includes more than 2,500 pieces coming mainly from two collections: that of the Board of Trustees of the Pellizzi Collection, A.C. and that of Fomento Cultural Banamex A.C. The latter contains important examples of Chiapas fabrics acquired since 1996. With more than 600 pieces gathered with the support of the National Bank of Mexico and selected by Cándida Fernández de Calderón and the guidance of Pedro Meza and almost all of them made by women from the Society of Sna Jolobil weavers, this collection continues to get richer.

Mesoamerican Jade Museum

This museum is part of the cultural infrastructure of the Jade House. The collection on display is the product of the work carried out in the workshops of the Casa de Jade, whose artisans make archaeological replicas and jewelry in gold and silver with jade inlays.

Los Altos Cultural Center

The property was built in the 18th century, inaugurated on October 31, 1983 and reopened on October 31, 2014. In 2012 it was adapted to house the Cultural Center of Los Altos de Chiapas. Mayan Medicine Museum

The Museum of Mayan Medicine is a museum located in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. Its purpose is the dissemination of Tsotsil-Tseltal healing practices in the state of Chiapas. The museum also has a garden where medicinal plants are exhibited and a traditional medicine store with products made by traditional doctors who work in the Organization of Indigenous Doctors of the State of Chiapas.

El Carmen Cultural Center

Originally the building was founded in the mid-16th century, initially it housed the Carmelite Convent, later it was a Rest House (Morgue), after time it housed the Judicial Police, it also housed the Nursing Home and in 1978 it was adapted to house the El Carmen Cultural Center.

Temple of Santa Lucia

This construction that names this popular neighborhood of the city dates back to 1819, demolished in the second half of the 19th century. In its place, the Coleto engineer Carlos Z. Flores built the current building between 1884 and 1892, in a neoclassical style with neo-Gothic elements, which maintains the traditional structure of the churches in the region: a single nave covered with wood and tile.

Temple and Arch of Carmen

Erected in 1680 in the purest Mudejar style in colonial times, it belonged to the Convent of La Encarnación. This building formerly served as the gateway to the Royal City, and has currently been adopted as a symbol of its identity.

It is an annex to the Temple of Carmen. Its initial function was to serve as a bell tower for the church. An opening in its lower part perhaps gave access to the convent, or served as a passage between two parts of the city; Its image has become an important part of the city.

Temple of San Francisco

Founded by the Franciscans in 1577, this small, fairly simple church contains baroque altarpieces and a pulpit.

Cerrito Temple

Three blocks from the Church of La Merced, between the neighborhoods of La Merced and San Antonio, the staircase begins that ascends to the El Cerrito Church, located at the top of the Cerro de San Cristóbal Mártir, patron saint of the city.
This temple, also known as San Cristobalito, was built by Brother Juan de Ordoñez at the end of the 18th century.

Temple of Guadalupe

The temple is located in the neighborhood of the same name, its origin dates back to the mid-19th century, it was born as an extension of the El Cerrillo neighborhood.

Behind its hills, an extension of Cuxtitali known as La Garita was formed, which was an obligatory passage to enter and leave the San Cristóbal valley from its nearby communities.

The Guadalupe Neighborhood is the Local Sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Lady of Tepeyac and Patroness of Mexico, the sculpture of the image was donated by the dean of the Cathedral, Don Lino García in 1850.

Temple of Charity

This complex was founded in 1712 by the order of Los Juaninos, along with the first hospital for indigenous people that operated in the city and which they consecrated to the Virgin of Charity. Its façade has curious shapes, as it shows groups of pilasters with curvilinear bodies that resemble carvings on wood; Some critics claim that this style was used in Peru during the 18th century and that it came from there. The interior of the temple preserves a baroque altarpiece dedicated to the virgin and another to a Black Christ from Esquipulas, Guatemala.

Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán

The temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán was the first baroque church built and the most important of the Dominican buildings in Chiapas. The Dominican order was in charge of evangelizing the majority of the indigenous population of Chiapas. Its hegemony over other religious orders, in the previously called Captaincy General of Chiapa and Guatemala, was absolute. The Dominican arrival in San Cristóbal took place on March 12, 1545, after a long journey from Salamanca, Spain.

Temple of San Nicolás

Calvary Temple

Sna Jolobil Cooperative

The House of Weaving, its meaning in the Mayance language, brings together around 800 weavers from the Highlands of Chiapas who for years have been in charge of preserving and revitalizing Mayan textile art. In each of its pieces, made of cotton and wool, sensitivity, respect, wisdom and a series of symbols inherited from its community are reflected.

Huipiles, blouses, cushions, tablecloths, bedspreads, bags and other handmade creations represent the spirit, the family, the ceremonies to pay admiration to the sky, the rain and all the living beings in the environment.

Woodcutters Workshop

Publishing collective operated by contemporary Mayan artists in Chiapas, Mexico. Founded in 1975 by the poet Ámbar Past, the Workshop has published the first books written, illustrated, printed and bound (with paper from its own manufacture) by the Mayan people in more than 400 years.

Among its multiple objectives, it is worth mentioning those of documenting, exalting and disseminating native and popular cultural values: literature in indigenous languages, the plastic arts, the painted codex. The Leñateros are dedicated to rescuing ancient techniques that are on the verge of disappearing, such as the extraction of dyes from wild herbs and the recovery of native languages.

Taller Leñateros promotes ecology, recycling agricultural and industrial waste to transform it into world-renowned art books.

Municipal market

The Municipal Market of San Cristóbal, named after the governor who built it, is located on the streets of General Utrilla and Díaz Ordaz.
